Senior emergency management official with the Ministry of Interior Raed Arafat, head of the Emergency Management Department (DSU), on Thursday urged the relevant bodies to carefully monitor the use of open fire amidst an ongoing scorching heatwave.
"Regarding the risk of forest fires and the risk of vegetation fires - monitor the use of open fire: no open fire in areas with forests, no open fire in areas with vegetation and monitor that intensely. Get the Mountain Rescue involved, please, in the mountainous areas, in the wooded areas, to monitor this situation especially on weekends, when people go out and use fire as a means of cooking," Arafat told an operational meeting led by the Minister of Interior Catalin Predoiu.
The meeting aimed to establish the necessary measures to manage the problems generated by the ongoing heatwave affecting Romania.
Arafat asked that any call from wooded areas related to the presence of smoke be announced for the observation of the situation, including through the aerial monitoring means of the General Inspectorate for Aviation.
Predoiu asked the chairs of the county emergency management committees and the Bucharest City emergency management to quickly consider implementing the plan of measures and actions for such situations.
"A scorching heatwave is being forecast for the time immediately ahead, and that means checking if everyone is able to exercise their duties. We do not wait until the last moment to find out what's happening on the ground."
