Senior foreign affairs official Neculescu attends International Conference organised by UNRCCA in Ashgabat

Secretary of State with Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) Dan Neculaescu highlighted, at the United Nations Regional Centre For Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) International Conference in Ashgabat, the relevance of activities of this body, especially on the prevention side, in the context of multiplied challenges which Central Asia is confronted with - international terrorism and extremism, illegal drug trafficking, organised crime and environment degradation. 

State Secretary Dan Neculaescu participated on Monday in the International Conference called "UNRCCA: 10 years of cooperation with Central Asia for peace and prosperity in the region," organised in Ashgabat, by the UNRCCA. 

According to a MAE release, Neculaescu mentioned that Romania endorses the activity of the UN Center in Ashgabat, including as co-sponsor of the UN General Assembly's resolution regarding the UNRCCA of November 2017 and it is interested in deepening the bilateral relations with other countries of the region. He underscored that the stability of Central Asia has a positive effect over the stability of the Black Sea extended area. 

On the sidelines of the Conference, the Romanian State Secretary had bilateral meetings with counterparts of the Republic of Tajikistan (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Muzaffar Huseinzoda) and the Kyrgyz Republic (Deputy Foreign Minister Dinara Kamelova), with whom he discussed with about the re-launching of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, especially at the UN level, the MAE informs. 

Moreover, Dan Neculaescu had a meeting with the Special Representative, Head of the UN Regional Centre For Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Natalia Gherman, with whom he tackled concrete ways through which Romania can develop a cooperation with the UN Centre in Ashgabat in the benefit of the states of the region. 

The Romanian official also met chiefs of missions of EU member states accredited in Ashgabat, aiming to assess the stage and outlooks of cooperation between the EU and Turkmenistan, the release mentions. 

The United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) was established following the exchange of letters of 16 May 2007 between the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council and was the result of the consensus reached between the governments of the five Central Asian countries: the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. The setting up of the Centre is part of UN efforts to develop its capabilities in the area of conflict prevention 

The leadership of the Center is ensured by Natalia Gherman, as Special Representative, Head of the UN Regional Centre For Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, who was appointed in this office on 15 September 2017.
