Border guards at the Nadlac II customs offices on Wednesday morning found 17 people from Cuba, Syria and Iraq hidden in a lorry driven by a Turkish national shipping goods to Belgium.

"A Turkish national showed up for customs clearance on the way out of Romania behind the wheel of a road vehicle registered in Turkey that was shipping, according to the cargo manifest, various goods from Turkey to Belgium. Based on a risk profile, a thorough control of the vehicle was carried out, as a result of which the border guards found, in the compartment intended for the transport of goods, among the transported goods, 17 foreign nationals, who were taken for investigations. During the checks, our colleagues established that there are citizens from Syria, Iraq and Cuba, who intended to illegally cross the state border," the Arad Border Police reports.

The Turkish driver is being investigated for migrant smuggling, and those hiding in the lorry for attempting to illegally cross the state border.
