The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, WTA World No. 1, has eased on Thursday in Melbourne into the third round of the Australian Open, first Grand Slam tournament of the year, after overwhelming the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-2.
Halep (26 y/o) defeated Bouchard (23 y/o, WTA No. 112) in only 66 minutes of full control of the match, despite the ankle accident she has suffered in the first round.
Simona Halep has now collected 3-1 in her direct duels with Bouchard, after the success she had in 2014, in the round of sixteen at Indian Wells, ended in 6-2 1-6 6-4, and in the group at the Champions Tournament in Singapore, 6-2 6-3. The only victory of the Canadian player against the Romanian was recorded in 2014, in the Wimbledon's semi-finals, 7-6 (5) 6-2. The two tennis players might meet again next month in north-western Cluj-Napoca, in the Fed Cup.
Simona Halep who had not passed from first round in Melbourne in the last two years, has secured an AUD 142,500 cheque and 130 WTA points.
She'll oppose next the American Lauren Davis (24 y/o, WTA No. 76), whom she managed to defeat in their only direct match in 2013, in the first round at Indian Wells, 6-2 6-0.
