Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday asked for Romania's support for Slovakia's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.
'I openly asked you today to support our candidacy for membership of the Security Council for the years 2027-2028, and I thank you for the agreement you have given us,' Fico said in a press release delivered alongside Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan at Victoria Palace.
He noted that the discussion with the Romanian Prime Minister took place in a climate of 'respect' and expressed his appreciation for this. He also highlighted the attention paid to the Slovak minority, describing them as 'loyal' citizens of Romania who have preserved their Slovak identity.
'I would have to go far back in time to characterise Romanian-Slovak bilateral relations. (...) I must thank you for the contribution you made to the liberation of Slovakia. When we speak about the liberation of Bratislava, we always mention the Romanian army, which, on vessels on the Danube, helped to liberate Slovakia,' he added.
Robert Fico assured that Slovakia would show due respect to the monuments erected in memory of Romanian soldiers who lost their lives for the liberation of his country between 1944 and 1945.
The Slovak Prime Minister also said that his country would not forget that in 1968, when Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia to stop reforms, Romania did not take part in that military action. He also referred to the fact that Romania was among the first states to recognise Slovakia's independence following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia. In turn, the Slovak Republic approved Romania's accession to the European Union.
'I want trust to continue to be demonstrated. We want you to be partners in the OECD. It is an extremely important organisation,' he added.
Fico also stated that the Slovak people are a 'proud' nation, capable of defending their sovereignty and protecting their interests.
