Smuggled cigarettes worth half a million euro, seized at Siret Customs

Siret Border Crossing Point Police (SPF) - Sighetu Marmatiei Border Police Territorial Inspectorate (ITPF) officers, in collaboration with the Romanian Customs Authority detained a lorry carrying over 2.6 million cigarettes worth half a million euro, Sighetu Marmatiei Border Police Territorial Inspectorate Spokesperson Iulia Stan informed on Tuesday.

According to the source, the packs of cigarettes, coming from outside the EU, were hidden in a lorry registered in Ukraine carrying pallets with construction material.

The total value of the seizure is estimated at over 2,580,000 lei (approximately 516,000 euro). The lorry and the load were seized until the end of investigations, said Iulia Stan.

According to the same source, investigations are conducted under the coordination of a prosecutor with the Prosecutor's Officer near the Radauty Court, for smuggling and fake document use, according to Law No 86/2006 on Romania's Customs Code.
