Gisele Sapiro, one of the most influential voices in contemporary literary sociology, a professor at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and an author translated into numerous languages, will participate on November 10 and 11 in a series of events organised in Bucharest: interviews, book launches and debates dedicated to world literature, the dynamics of the transnational literary field and the responsibility of intellectuals, Headsome Communication reports in a release.
The French-speaking public will have the opportunity to meet Gisele Sapiro at the Kyralina Bookstore on Monday, November 10, from 18:00 at the launch of her most recent volumes: "Qu'est-ce qu'un auteur mondial? Le champ litteraire transnational" (2024) and "Des mots qui tuent. La responsabilite de l'intellectuel en temps de crise (1944-1945)" (2020).
Along with the author, the event organized in partnership with the weekly "Observator cultural" will feature writers and literary critics Magda Raduta, Despina Jderu, Bogdan Ghiu, and journalist Matei Martin. The discussion will be in French, with free access.
On Tuesday, November 11, as of 18:00, Gisele Sapiro will deliver a conference in English titled "What is a world author?" at the Balcescu Amphitheater of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest.
The free access event addresses both the university community and the general public and will be followed by a debate with some of the most important Romanian literary critics and theorists: Mircea Martin, Delia Ungureanu, Magda Raduta, Dragos Jipa, Despina Jderu, Lucia Dragomir, Caius Dobrescu, Oana Fotache, Roxana Eichel and Carmen Musat, providing a complex analysis of how literature is defined and repositioned in an increasingly interconnected world.
"Through this series of events, the public is invited to a dialogue about the writer's role in society, about how literature can become a force of cultural resistance and how ideas circulate in transnational networks. The two meetings with Gisele Sapiro represent two rare opportunities to interact directly with one of the leading voices of international literary theory," the cited source said.
Gisele Sapiro's visit to Bucharest and the events surrounding her presence in Romania are taking place under the banner "Cultural Observer - 25 years", the anniversary program through which the literary magazine marks a quarter of a century of critical dialogue, reflection and promotion of authentic cultural values.
Drawing on the intellectual foundations laid by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and literary theorist Itamar Even-Zohar, Gisele Sapiro continues and develops their legacy through her analysis of the transnational circulation of literary works, authors, and ideas. Her scholarship on literary autonomy, translation, and the ethical role of intellectuals has significantly reshaped contemporary understandings of the interplay between cultural production, power structures, and societal dynamics, the cited source said.
