Approximately 3,500 foreign nationals were found to be in illegal situations in Romania last year, when over 2,800 return decisions have been issued, the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) reported on Thursday, as it presented its Activity Assessment Report for 2024 during an event organized on the occasion of the Inspectorate Day.

Last year, the General Inspectorate for Immigration managed the stay in Romania of approximately 240,000 foreigners, by almost 20% more compared to 2023.

There were over 24,000 visa applications and over 4,500 invitation and family reunification applications, with visa applications for family reunification seeing the steepest increase - 30% compared to 2023.

One of the most important activity segments was the registration and resolution of applications for the issuance of work permits, as over 130,000 applications for work permits were submitted in the reporting period, and the IGI issued almost 106,000 permits, approximately 7% more than in 2023.

"Following operational activities, approximately 3,500 irregular foreigners were detected and over 2,800 return decisions were issued. In order to implement escorted return operations, 1,033 persons were taken into public custody, and approximately 1,100 persons were removed under escort from Romania," the release states.

In the field of asylum procedures, the Inspectorate specifies that the trend was downward, with a decrease by over 75% in the number of applications, approximately 2,000 applications resolved, and a form of protection being granted in over 700 cases.

Also, as a result of the regulation of temporary protection conditions since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, residence permits have been issued/re-issued for over 162,000 beneficiaries of temporary protection.

For 2025, the General Inspectorate for Immigration sets itself as main goals: implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum, completely digitizing the procedure for the issuance of work permits, developing the logistical capacities necessary for the accommodation of foreigners and achieving its targets as an Intermediate Body AMIF 2021-2027, including attracting new sources of financing.
