Romania's public debt could hit RON 1,150 billion this year, S.O.S. Senator Cosmina Cerva declared on Wednesday during the plenary parliamentary session on the 2025 budget.

"I drew a parallel between the governing program released in December and what this government has tabled in February, in the budget draft. Whereas in December Mr. Ciolacu promised us that in terms of fiscal-budgetary reforms the budget would be realigned according to the new development priorities and multiple other criteria explained on many pages, today he presents us a budget blueprint as follows - in 2024, the budget draft provided for a RON 96 billion deficit. However, the deficit was much higher. To the initially estimated RON 96 billion, another RON 21.5 billion in unrealized revenues were added, plus 31.1 billion in additional budget expenditures, thus widening the budget deficit to RON 148.6 billion," she explained.

Given this deficit, the senator argued, Romania's public debt is likely to increase by RON 200 billion in 2025, "which would mean that at the end of the year Romania will run a public debt of about RON 1,150 billion."

"This means that from one year to another, Romania is sinking in over-indebtedness," said Cerva.
