Statistics: Manufacturing industry grows 3pct four months into 2024

The volume of new orders in the manufacturing industry grew 3% in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2023, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Monday.

According to the official statistics, in the period from 1 January to 30 April 2024, in the margin of growth in the number of new orders, positive results were recorded in the capital goods industry (+7.9%). On the other hand, decreases were reported in: the current-use goods industry (-4.6%), the intermediate goods industry (-3.3%) and the durable goods industry (-1.6%).

Compared to April 2023, in April this year, new orders in manufacturing increased in nominal terms by 8.5%, due to activity in: the intermediate goods industry (+9.9%), the capital goods industry (+9.6%) and the durable goods industry (+2.5%). In contrast, the current goods industry fell 3.1%.

Also, on a month-on-month basis (April vs. March 2024), the number of new orders in manufacturing decreased 3.6%, due to decreases in: the consumer goods industry (-8.8%), the durable goods industry (-7.2%) and the capital goods industry (-5.1%).

Only the intermediate goods industry grew, with an advance of 1%.
