Statistics: Net average salary reaches 4,959 lei, up 547 lei, in 2024

The average gross monthly salary recorded at the national economy level in 2024 was 8,061 lei, up by 14.5% (+1,019 lei) compared to the previous year, while the net average salary reached 4,959 lei, an increase of 12.4% (+547 lei) compared to the previous year, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Thursday.

According to INS data, in 2024 the real wage index (the ratio between the nominal net wage index and the consumer price index for the population) was 248.9% compared to 1990, up by 15.1 percentage points from the previous year.

Women earned on average, in gross terms, 3.6% less than men, with a gross average monthly salary of 7,907 lei (compared to 8,201 lei for men). In net terms, women earned 5.4% or 275 lei/month less than men (4,815 lei net average salary for women vs. 5,090 lei for men).

At county level, in 36 counties the net average monthly salary in 2024 was below the national average.

The lowest net average salaries were recorded in: Teleorman (3,822 lei, 22.9% below national average), Valcea (3,881 lei, 21.7% below), Vrancea (3,890 lei, 21.6% below), Covasna (3,896 lei, 21.4% below).

At the other end, the highest net average salaries were found in: Bucharest (6,730 lei, 35.7% above the national average), Cluj (5,921 lei, 19.4% above),
Timis (5,508 lei, 11.1% above), Iasi (5,098 lei, 2.8% above), Ilfov (5,060 lei, 2.0% above), Brasov (5,019 lei, 1.2% above).

According to INS, the average monthly labour cost in 2024 was 8,439 lei per employee, up by 14.4% from the previous year.

The average monthly cost increased across all economic activities compared to the previous year, except for the extractive industry, which saw a 4.7% decline.

In 2024, the average number of employees was 5.45 million, up by 88,200 people compared to the previous year, as a result of expanded activity in some socio-economic units. Men remained the majority, representing 52.4% of all employees (2.86 million people), an increase of 69,800 compared to the previous year.

According to the data, the distribution of employees by economic sector shows that most were employed in the tertiary sector (64.6%) - 44.3% in commercial services, 20.3% in social services. 33% worked in the secondary sector (industry and construction), and 2.4% in the primary sector (agriculture, forestry, and fishing).

Construction and extractive industry were predominantly male-dominated, with men representing 86.6% and 83.8% of employees in these fields, respectively.

The main economic activities with majority female employment were: Health and social care (80.1%), Education (73.1%), Financial intermediation and insurance (70.4%), Hotels and restaurants (60.5%), Public administration (60.2%), Cultural, performing and recreational activities (59.2%).

At the end of 2024, the total number of employees was 5.75 million, up by 75,600 from the end of the previous year, of whom 68,200 were men.

At the end of 2024, the number of employees in privately owned companies was in the majority (77.1%) and recorded an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous year.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the distribution of employees by the legal form of enterprises showed that those employed in commercial companies accounted for 80.2% of the total number of employees at the end of the year, representing an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous year.
