Giorgia Meloni is trying to play an important role in the formation of the new European Commission, to be part of the majority and is in a good negotiating position, European affairs and strategic communication expert Doru Frantescu told AGERPRES on Monday.

"Meloni's message is a warning to the leaders of the centrist political families, in the sense that if they do not want to collaborate with her, then she also has the option of getting closer to Marine Le Pen in order to form a formidable opposition force in Europe," Frantescu explained, in connection to a statement by the Italian prime minister - on a possible second term for Ursula von der Leyen at the head of the European Commission - that the result of the European Parliament election in Italy "requires Europe to look more to the right."

According to the Romanian expert, von der Leyen's chances of becoming president of the EU executive for another five years have increased as a result of the good result of the European People's Party in the European Parliament elections of June 6-9.

However, calculations are complicated by the fact that some potential allies, such as Emmanuel Macron's party, have lost seats in the EP.

"I think that von der Leyen will indeed be the first proposal for the president of the European Commission to be considered by the European Council, but for this to be the official proposal of the council, an agreement must be reached with the Socialists and the Liberals. Then, in Parliament, at a quick analysis, Ursula von der Leyen is still missing about 60-70 votes, which she has to gather from different political corners, through compromises," said Frantescu, who has been monitoring the vote in the European Parliament and the influence of MEPs in Brussels for almost two decades on platforms such as EUmatrix and VoteWatch.eu.

On the other hand, he said that the governments in Paris and Berlin were "seriously shaken" by the result of the European elections, amid the current very low popularity of Macron and Scholz among their own citizens.

In his opinion, the lower score of Renew Europe in the European Parliament elections of June 6-9 is explained by the fact that this European political family has suffered especially from less popular reforms of Emmanuel Macron in France, such as the reform of the pension system. "In other countries, such as Romania, where Renew had a relatively large delegation, it lost seats due to fragmentation into several parties, some of which did not cross the threshold," he said.

As for the Greens, who also lost a significant number of seats in the EP, they suffered from the reorientation of the priorities of the electorate, which this year is much more concerned with the rising cost of living, inflation, than with environmental policies. Particularly in Germany, the Greens have also suffered as a result of the natural erosion of a ruling party.
