Young doctors, medical residents and medical students can participate, starting Wednesday, in a study aimed at identifying the reasons why some of them choose to practise medicine abroad, said MP Andrei Baciu, a member of the specialist committee of the Chamber of Deputies, agerpres reports.

'The study was developed together with a team of young professionals and senior experts in sociology. (...) From Romania, no one knows the exact number, but it is estimated that around 25,000 doctors have left the country in the past 25 years. More concerning is the fact that one in two young doctors under the age of 35 is considering emigration. It is absolutely essential that we have enough doctors in Romania to build a healthcare system that is as modern and European as possible. I believe it is crucial to understand the real causes and motivations behind doctors' decisions to leave. Equally important is to identify the factors that would make Romania a viable alternative,' Baciu explained.

He pointed out the need to set priorities and take the necessary legislative measures.

'We must identify the true priorities and get to work so that we can actually bring about change in this country. I encourage medical residents and students to go to the website - https://respectpentrumediciitineri.ro - and fill in the questionnaire. We want to understand in detail the real reasons, so that we can build genuine solutions tailored to the needs of young doctors and medical students, both in Romania and in the diaspora. That is why I want to turn the conclusions and insights we gather from this study into clear legislative measures, which I will propose in Parliament,' Andrei Baciu said.

According to the MP, the project is being supported by the following universities: 'Carol Davila' University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest; 'George Emil Palade' University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology, Targu Mures; the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Craiova; 'Grigore T. Popa' University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi; 'Iuliu Hatieganu' University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca; 'Victor Babes' University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara.

Support in designing the questionnaire was also provided by numerous student organisations, including: the Federation of Medical Students' Associations in Romania, Bucharest Medical Students' Society, Cluj Medical Students' Organisation, Craiova Medical Students' Society, University Association for Medicine and Medical Assistance, Timisoara Medical Students' Society, Scientific Association of Brasov Medical Students, Hermannstadt Medical Students' Society, Galati Medical Students' Society, Targu Mures Students' League, Constanta Medical Students and Young Doctors' Association, Iasi Medical Students' Society, Oradea Medical Students' Association.
