The Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM) announced on Thursday having decided to defend judicial independence against attacks by representatives of other powers.
According to CSM, the plenum also found that the statements made by Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Liviu Dragnea on a TV show on June 10 are likely to put pressure on how to investigate a criminal case.
"The CSM plenum ensures the Romanian society that the magistrates exercise their powers according to the constitutional standard, while firmly calling on the political class to guarantee the observance of the principles of separation and balance between the state powers."
CSM took up on Wednesday a request for the defence of judicial independence filed by the Romanian Judicial Forum Association "against the attacks coming from representatives of the legislative power and the executive power materialised in the speeches of some political leaders on June 9 and 10," CSM sources told Agerpres. According to the sources, the decision was taken by 15 ayes.
CSM considered on Wednesday a request to defend judicial independence, which discussion was postponed on June 14th.
The Romanian Judicial Forum Association(FJR) filed a request with CSM in June for a defence of judicial independence "against the recent attacks by the leading representatives of the legislative and the executive powers, materialised in the speeches of some political leaders on June 9 and 10, respectively."
According to FJR, the "immediate" intervention of CSM, as a guarantor of judicial independence is needed to "stop the unprecedented attacks on judges and prosecutors."
Also, the National Union of Romania's Judges and the Association of Romania's Magistrates called on "all interested persons" to be aware that justice problems are solved by institutional procedures, not in the streets.
