Table tennis players Bernadette Szocs, Elizabeta Samara qualify for quarterfinals of Europe Top 16 Cup

Romanian players Bernadette Szocs and Elizabeta Samara qualified on Friday for the quarterfinals of the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup tournament, which brings together the best table tennis players on the continent in Montreux (Switzerland).

Bernadette Szocs, the main seed, defeated Maria Xiao (Spain) 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-9) on Friday in the round of 16, according to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation website. The Romanian, bronze medalist at last year's edition, will play on Saturday in the quarterfinals versus Germanys Xiaona Shan.

Elizabeta Samara won the round of 16 against Hungarian Georgina Pota, 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-6), and will face Swedish Linda Bergstrom in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Szocs won the competition in 2018, lost the final in 2019, and finished third in 2021 and 2022. Samara also has a podium finish in 2018 (third place).

Eduard Ionescu lost in the men's round of 16 against Slovenian Darko Jorgic, the title holder, 2-3 (20-18, 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 6-11).
