Cristian Niculescu Tagarlas, president of the Senate Committee on Culture and Media, states that Press Freedom Day represents a good opportunity to appreciate the role that the media have in a democratic society and to raise awareness of their importance, Agerpres reports.
"As chairman of the Senate Committee on Culture and Media, but also as the initiator of projects dedicated to the press, I strongly support the need to protect and support honest, free and professional journalism," the liberal wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.
He congratulates "the journalists who, with honesty and courage, do their job every day."
"I tell them that I will propose projects that support quality press and combat the phenomenon of disinformation so that we have a legislative framework adapted to the times we live in. One of the initiatives that I am particularly keen on is the establishment of the Romanian Press Museum, a project that I launched in Baia Mare and which still has one stage to go before the final vote. I believe that the press must be honored through concrete deeds, and this initiative is a form of respect for those who have put their pen, voice or image in the service of the truth," the liberal senator pointed out.
