Tennis: Cezar Cretu to meet Piotr Nesterov in first match of Romania-Bulgaria duel in Davis Cup

Romanian tennis player Cezar Cretu will face Piotr Nesterov, on Friday, in the first singles match of the meeting between the men's tennis teams of Romania and Bulgaria, in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group I play-off, in the Polivalenta Hall in Craiova, according to the draw made on Thursday at the Art Museum in Craiova.

Cretu (23 years old, 315th ATP) and Nesterov (21 years old, 437th ATP) have faced each other three times so far, with the Bulgarian leading in victories, with a score of 2-1.

The second singles match on Friday will pit Filip Jianu (23 years old, 234 ATP) against Ilian Radulov (19 years old, 533 ATP), a first-time duel.

On Saturday, the doubles match is scheduled, between the pairs Victor Cornea/Bogdan Pavel and Aleksandar Donski/Piotr Nesterov. Cornea (31) is ranked 87th in the world in doubles, while Pavel (25) is ranked 248th. Donski (26) is ranked 230th in the ATP doubles rankings, while Nesterov is ranked 304th.

In the third singles match, Jianu would face Nesterov (a first), and the final singles match would bring Cretu against Radulov (also a first).

The captain of the Romanian team also has Adrian Boitan (25, 366th ATP), while the captain of Bulgaria, Valentin Dimov, has also called up Adrian Andreev (23, 233rd ATP) and Ianaki Milev (20, 487th ATP).

Romania and Bulgaria have met only once before in the Davis Cup, in 1988, when the tricolors achieved a decisive victory with a score of 5-0.

The winner of the match between Romania and Bulgaria will advance to World Group I in September 2025, while the losing team will advance to World Group II.
