The film "The Heist of the Century", Romania's proposal for the 2026 Oscars, a film written and produced by Cristian Mungiu and directed by Teodora Ana Mihai, will open, on Thursday, the 6th edition of the Romanian Film Festival in Washington.
The festival was organised by the Romanian Embassy in the US and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, with the support of numerous sponsors and local partners, and it will take place in one of the most famous cinema halls in the American capital - AMC Georgetown 14, between November 13 and 16.
According to a press release of the Romanian Embassy in the US, under the title "New Romanian Perspectives", the festival presents six recent films, which confirm the vitality, originality and international recognition of contemporary Romanian cinema. The selection, endorsed by film critic Mihai Fulger, crosses diverse genres and styles, from psychological drama and social documentary, to political satire and sports biography, explain the organisers.
The festival, which has become one of Romania's largest and longest-running cultural diplomacy projects in North America, will be opened by Romania's ambassador to the United States, Andrei Muraru, and the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, Dorian Branea.
The festival programme includes, in addition to "The Heist of the Century", Romania's proposal for the 2026 Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category, the films "Dinti de lapte"/"Baby Teeth" (directed by Mihai Mincan), "Tata"/"Father" (directed by Lina Vdovîi, Radu Ciorniciuc), "Comatogen" (directed by Igor Cobileanski), "Nasty" (directed by Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu, Tudor D. Popescu) and "Anul nou care n-a fost"/"The New Year That Never Came" (directed by Bogdan Muresanu).
Actress Daniela Nane, the protagonist of the drama "Comatogen", and Tudor D. Popescu, one of the directors of the documentary dedicated to Ilie Nastase, as well as, online, Teodora Ana Mihai, the director of the film running for an Oscar, will meet with the American audience, while Cristian Mungiu will send a recorded message.
