Tobacco exports from Romania are among the most important, and in the relation with Japan they are in first place, with 70% of Romania's exports to Japan being represented by tobacco and tobacco products, Radu Oprea, the Secretary General of the Government, told Thursday's conference in which JTI Romania announced that it is investing approximately 300 million euros to build a new factory in Stefanestii de Jos.

"I am honored to be in front of you today, to walk together a path that we began perhaps when I was in the Senate Economic Committee and then minister of economy, because always in order to grow together, we must have trust and we must be able to establish a partnership. And the fact that today the Romanian Government has a special working group for the tobacco industry, is felt and is felt because we have been together throughout the international process, when this industry needs support, the last time in Geneva, earlier in Paraguay. But more than that, Romania is present alongside JTI and the other major international players and the tobacco industry has become one of the most important industries, both from the perspective of the fiscal footprint, the contribution it has to the state budget, but also of balancing the trade balance, because tobacco exports from Romania are perhaps among the most important, and in the relation with Japan they rank first, with 70% of Romania's exports to Japan being represented by tobacco and tobacco products. I think we have exceeded 600 million," said Radu Oprea.

He stated that the industry currently needs representation in Brussels, because the great challenges of this industry come from there, and Romania must have a very well-consolidated position as a country.

Oprea also mentioned that one of the important components that has a direct impact on this industry is the way in which we manage to limit illegal imports of tobacco products into Romania.

JTI Romania announced on Thursday that it is investing approximately 300 million euros to build a new factory in Stefanestii de Jos, Ilfov County, which is due to be completed in 2027.
