Foreign Affairs Minister Oana Toiu said on Wednesday when asked about the drone which flew over the Romanian airspace, that a a stronger response from Romania is represented by the adoption in Parliament of the draft law stipulating prison sentences of 1 to 5 years for attempting and evading sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation, inform Agerpres.
"There have been several instances in which the airspace, especially on the Eastern Flank, has been illegally overflown. Several states are in this situation. We are in constant dialogue, sharing both the information we have regarding these incidents and the reactions of our countries, as well as joint responses. In Romania's specific case, since we had just summoned the Russian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the previous incident, we decided that a firmer response from Romania is exactly what we managed to do today in Parliament, namely the inclusion of prison sentences from 1 to 5 years for attempts and evasion of sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation. This is Romania's response," Minister Toiu said.
The minister also mentioned that she always announced when she summoned the Russian ambassador.
Asked whether she had tried to request explanations from the Russian side, formally or informally, regarding this drone, the minister said: "From our point of view, at this moment, beyond discussions, firm responses are needed, and the 1-to-5-year prison sentence for sanction evasion is Romania's firm response."
A drone without a payload was found on Tuesday in a locality in Vaslui county, National Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu said during a visit he paid to the 57th Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base. According to him, the drone fell in Puiesti village.
Parliament approved the Government's bill tightening penalties for those who evade sanctions imposed on some businesses or individuals from the Russian Federation, Foreign Affairs Minister Oana Toiu said on Wednesday.
