Turnover in industry grows 4pct in first five months

The manufacturing industry contributed the most to the 4% growth in industry turnover in the first five months of this year, compared to the similar period in 2023, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Wednesday.

Thus, between January 1 and May 31, 2024, the manufacturing industry recorded a 4.9% jump compared to the results recorded at the end of May of the previous year. In contrast, mining and quarrying fell 15.8% year-on-year.

By major industrial groups, increases in turnover were reported in the capital goods industry (+8.6%), the durable goods industry (+3.6%), the consumer goods industry (+2.3%), the intermediate goods industry (+1.5%) and the energy industry (+0.5%).

Official statistics reveal, however, that in May 2024 vs May 2023, the turnover in industry decreased in nominal terms 7.1%, as a result of activities in manufacturing (-7.1%) and mining and quarrying (-7%).

At the same time, by major industrial groups, decreases were recorded in the energy industry (-11.5%), the durable goods industry (-9.6%), the intermediate goods industry (-7.5%), the capital goods industry (-7.2%) and the consumer goods industry (-4.3%).

According to the INS, from one month to the next (May - April 2024), industrial business decreased in total 8.5%, after the negative results in manufacturing (-8.7%) and mining (-3.3%).

In the same period of analysis, according to the major industrial groups, business decreased in: the capital goods industry (-10.3%), the energy industry (-10.1%),the intermediate goods industry (-8.1%), the consumer goods industry (-6.4%) and the durable goods industry (-4.8%).
