The increase in the number of troops in the Romanian-Ukrainian border area on the territory of Tulcea County, as well as the location of several observation points and ground sensors explains the speed with which the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) identified on Friday, in Ceatalchioi commune, traces of a drone used in the war started by Russia against Ukraine, informs Agerpres.
According to the data provided to AGERPRES by MApN, from September 5, 2023 until Friday, January 17, 2025, 12 situations were identified on Romanian territory, 11 of which in Tulcea County, as a result of which fragments of drones were found on Romanian territory, and of these seven were found in the Plauru area, Ceatalchioi commune.
MApN recalled that, after identifying the first drone fragments that fell on the territory of Romania, it took a series of measures in the area close to the border with Ukraine and thus explained the speed with which it discovered the traces of drones on Friday, under conditions in which they were previously found or made public at least 12 hours after the attack.
The cited source also refers to electronic warfare that involves both false signals of aerial targets and real attacks, a telling case being the one on September 8, 2024, when a Russian unmanned aerial platform was also monitored by radars from ground and by the F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, under the command of NATO, which was scrambled to clarify air situation.
"From the information obtained through the electronic surveillance systems and through other means of monitoring, the conditions of a direct military threat to the national territory or the territorial waters of Romania have not been met. In such situations, the measures are taken gradually, in a unitary manner, for the entire NATO airspace. The kinetic action against aircraft using unauthorized airspace is carried out under the conditions of an intentional attack, a hostile act against Romania's or NATO's territory. The F-16 aircraft constantly monitored the air situation, being able to intervene in the event of a danger to the national territory. The Ministry of National Defense informed and informs the allied structures in real time to the situations generated by the attacks, remaining in permanent contact with them", reads the MApN release sent to AGERPRES.
One of the drones used in the attack from Thursday night to Friday fell near a group of houses, very close to the county road, and the panic of the population was quite high, especially since the noise of the impact could also be heard in Tulcea municipality, Tudor Cernega, the mayor of Ceatalchioi commune, declared for AGERPRES.
In Chilia Veche, a Romanian town located across the Danube from the Ukrainian town of Kilia Noua, the Russian drone attack on the port infrastructure in the neighboring country could be seen even by the locals, the two towns being separated only by the river.
"There was panic in our place. All the boxes in the blocks in the locality are properly set up to protect the population," Timur Ciaus, mayor of the Chilia Veche commune, told AGERPRES.
The population of the north of Tulcea county received, on the night of Thursday to Friday, a RO-ALERT message about the possibility of some objects falling on the national territory, against the background of the war in Ukraine, and a person called the emergency number 112 to ask for additional information.
The message was sent by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) around 1:46 a.m., and the population was urged to shelter in safe areas for the next 90 minutes.
Shortly after the transmission of the message, the people of Tulcea could hear the specific noises of the planes flying over the national airspace.
This is the first RO-ALERT message issued since the beginning of the year for the communities of Tulcea County in the context of the war in Ukraine.
