Two individuals have been detained for 72 hours following the discovery Wednesday night, at the Leuseni-Albita border crossing, of firearms and ammunition in a truck registered in the Republic of Moldova, Radio Moldova reports. The Moldovan Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) confirmed that multiple pieces of evidence were seized.
The criminal investigation, initiated by the Customs Service under PCCOCS supervision, targets smuggling of ammunition and other strategic goods, Deschide.md reports. A joint investigative team has been formed, including officers from the Customs Service, the National Investigation Inspectorate (INI), and the Border Police Inspectorate General (IGPF).
The incident may be debated in Parliament. Renato Usatii, Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order, asserts that the weapons originated from Ukraine and is calling for urgent hearings at the committee's next session.
Usatii stated that the truck's cargo included FIM-92 Stinger missiles - a highly dangerous portable anti-aircraft system with a range of up to 4.8 kilometers - which is not part of Moldova's official arsenal. He noted that over 3,000 Stinger systems have been delivered to Ukraine by the U.S., with additional units supplied by European countries, suggesting a possible Ukrainian route for the smuggled weapons.
Usatii further called for a joint, transparent investigation involving authorities from Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine to identify all parties involved.
