Two young Ukrainian men who crossed the border into Romania through the Maramures Mountains were rescued by mountain rescuers and border police during the night from Sunday to Monday, according to Dan Benga, director of the Maramures County Public Mountain Rescue Service (SPJ Salvamont Maramures).

According to Benga, the nighttime search and rescue operation was launched after a friend of one of the young men in the mountains alerted authorities approximately 12 hours after their last phone contact. The friend reported that the young man had crossed the border around 10:00 a.m. and was in a precarious condition, lacking supplies, and facing cold and blizzard conditions in the mountains.

"Although there was no precise information about the missing person's last known location, mountain rescuers, together with border police from the Poienile de sub Munte Border Police, decided to follow a trail in an attempt to locate the young man. (...) The two Ukrainian citizens were found in a forest railway car, about 14 kilometers upstream on the Valea Repedea valley. The 24-year-old, who was the initial subject of the search, was experiencing vomiting but refused hospital transport by ambulance, stating he would seek medical assistance later through the border police if his condition worsened," said Dan Benga.

The two young men, aged 24 and 26, were handed over to the Border Police for standard procedures. AGERPRES
