National leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor says that if the Prime Minister-designate, Adrian Vestea, invites him to the negotiations, the UDMR will listen to the suggestions, but a decision will be taken after the governing agenda and the composition of the future cabinet will be known.
"The lesson of the last few weeks is clear: you can govern with a stable parliamentary majority, a clear agenda and responsible decisions. Eugen Tomac released the task of forming a government, after it became clear that a majority is not needed for the inauguration of the government. The head of state has now appointed Adrian Vestea, a politician of the National Liberal Party, former minister of development. However, the method of nomination raises questions: can we start building the government by avoiding parliamentary and political realities, because after the nomination it must be clarified whether there is parliamentary support behind it and how the National Liberal Party relates to it."
Kelemen announced that "a responsible decision" will be taken when it will be known what kind of parliamentary majority, government agenda and ministers the future government has.
"If the PM-designate invites us to negotiate, of course we will listen to his suggestions, as we did in the case of Eugen Tomac. That is the right and responsible attitude. When we already know what kind of parliamentary majority, what kind of government agenda and what kind of ministers it has, then we can make a responsible decision on the position of UDMR. People rightly expect Romania to have a functional government after prolonged political uncertainty. The conditions for this must be clarified in the coming days," Kelemen said.
