The nationally representative trade union confederations - CNS Cartel Alfa, CNSLR-Fratia, the National Trade Union Bloc (BNS), the Confederation of Democratic Trade Unions of Romania (CSDR) and CSN Meridian - sent a letter to the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, on Tuesday, requesting him to organize a meeting to mediate the conflict with the Bologna Government.
"The representative national trade union confederations in Romania - CNSLR-Fraţia, BNS, CNS Cartel Alfa, CSDR and CSN MERIDIAN, request you to organize a meeting with their leaderships, to mediate the conflict with the Romanian Government, caused by the refusal of the Prime Minister of the Romanian Government to dialogue with the representatives of the trade union confederations, on the topic of the austerity measures to be adopted by the Executive," the letter reads.
Union leaders warn that, in the event that the president does not respond to the request to mediate the conflict, the union confederations reserve the right to launch large-scale protest actions and initiate procedures for the launch of a general strike.
The trade union confederations requested, as early as Monday, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan for an emergency meeting on the austerity measures that are to be applied in the coming period, otherwise legal procedures will be initiated to trigger a general strike at national level.
Because they were not invited to the talks by the prime minister, the five trade union confederations have already raised the possibility of appealing to the head of state to exercise his role as mediator.
The letter is signed by Sorin Leonard Barascu, president of CNSLR-Fratia, Mircea Burlacu, vice-president of BNS, Bogdan Iuliu Hossu, president of CNS Cartel ALFA, Iacob Baciu, president of CSDR and Dumitru Fornea, secretary general of CSN Meridian.
