îThe University of Bucharest (UB) not only has a remarkable history, but it is also "a powerful", forward-looking actor, "a true benchmark of excellence" in education and research, and its graduates have contributed significantly to the building of modern Romania, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu conveyed on Tuesday in a message addressed to participants at the event organized at the National Opera House in Bucharest on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the University.
"Throughout these 160 years, the UB has become a true benchmark of excellence in education and research (...). ) It is our duty, as politicians, to involve the academic environment in the strategic decisions for Romania and to strengthen the collaboration between public institutions and universities. We need to internalize the idea that the economic and social development of the contemporary world is based on knowledge and that in modern economies human resources are often more important than productive resources," Ciolacu emphasized in the message presented by Alexandru - Mihai Ghigiu, head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery
The prime minister drew attention to manipulation and extremism, a phenomenon that "threatens" Romania's European future.
"In a world in which manipulation, extremism and fake-news are part of everyday life, we need citizens, especially young people, to have the tools to fight these phenomena that threaten Romania's European future, and you at the UB are doing this. There is probably no word closer to that of university than the word 'future'. (...) It is crucial to invest in the training of young specialists and in the development of research infrastructure in order to strengthen higher education in the creation of public policies based on scientific data and analysis (...). ) We want the international recognition of the University of Bucharest to further encourage the path to performance. Preparing young people for various fields and ensuring qualified human resources are priorities for the Romanian Government, which supports education in all its forms. (...) I assure you of our support. (...) We will have the confirmation that the Government has acted in the right direction, if our young people will place their future aspirations here, in Romania, and those who have already chosen a path abroad will want to come back home," Marcel Ciolacu also emphasized.
The University of Bucharest is celebrating this week its 160th anniversary. In addition to the official ceremony that took place on Tuesday, the University House will host the conference "The University of Bucharest - 160 - driving force of the modernization of Romania" on Wednesday, and the debate "160 years of international relations.UB and the European and international university alliances" on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, students and volunteers from the Museum of the University of Bucharest and the UB Faculty of History will organize an educational treasure hunt for the students of the 19 faculties. On Friday, UB university community is invited to the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden, to attend, in the picnic area, an event that concludes a week dedicated to the anniversary of 160 years since the founding of the University of Bucharest and 330 years of higher education in the Romanian space.
