The opposition Save Romania Union (USR) filed on Monday with Parliament a request for the select committees to be called to hear Romania's nominees for European Commissioner, arguing that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu "cannot cheat out" the legislative forum in this procedure.

"The nominees for the position of European Commissioner cannot get to Brussels without being heard in the European Affairs and Foreign Affairs committees. There is a need for a correct assessment of the skills and professionalism of the people who want to internationally represent Romania," the USR said in a release.

USR Chair Elena Lasconi once again asked the prime minister to make public the criteria for picking the candidates for Romanian European Commissioner, "and also send two proposals, a man and a woman, as the European Commission's President has requested."

USR asked Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to organize public consultations with all the parties and the civil society for the appointment of the Romanian future European Commissioner.

The deadline until each EU member state must nominate two candidates for European Commissioner in the future Community Executive is August 30, and hearings in the European Parliament will most likely take place in September, the USR indicated.
