Save Romania Union (USR) Chair Elena Lasconi argued on Friday that Romania's position at the Munich Security Conference is "opaque" and that the Romanians need to be explained the situation more clearly and in deeper detail, as well as the decisions being made on their behalf.

"Romania's position at the Munich Security Conference, where we are represented only by Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu, remains opaque, as it was with Iohannis. With all due respect to Mr. Hurezeanu, I say it openly that my expectation is that at least now we should start explaining the situation more clearly and in deeper detail to the citizens we represent, as well as what decisions are being made in their name. Otherwise, we will keep on wondering that the Russians are playing havoc with their gross manipulations," the USR leader wrote on Facebook.

Lasconi emphasized the importance of Ukraine being included in negotiations for "a lasting peace." Also, Europe must be involved as an "important player," not as a "passive actor," she added.

"The fate of Ukraine is being discussed this weekend in Munich. There are still many unknowns, but at least peace talks are being held almost three years after Russia invaded Ukraine. In all the discussions I've had with European officials in recent months, I have constantly cautioned of the importance of Ukraine being part of the negotiations, otherwise we will not have a lasting peace. And it is equally important that Europe is involved as an important player, not a passive one. If Poland can be an important player, so can Romania. As president, I will mobilize all the country's resources for Romania to once again gain international relevance. Our history is also being written according to what happens near our borders, and we must be present to defend and promote our interests," the USR leader said.

According to Lasconi, Romania is "absent from the table where decisions are made" regarding its most important security interests.

"Two days ago, Defense Minister Angel Tilvar participated in Brussels in the meeting with his NATO counterparts. Do you know what he did there, did you understand from him how Romania stands in this Alliance in these complicated times, what our plans are? After ten years of individual diplomacy by the former president, Romania is now absent from the table where decisions are made regarding its most important security interests. The world we live in is changing at a staggering pace and we need leaders who can correctly translate these changes for us and who can provide us the guarantee that they are working in our interest, that they are doing what is right," the USR leader pointed out.

Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu participates February 14 - 16 in the 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC 2025) which is slated to address current security threats and challenges in the political, economic, commercial and technological fields, including the current challenges, with an emphasis on the security situation in the Black Sea region and the implications of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine for the security of the Euro-Atlantic space, the Foreign Ministry informed.
