The European Center of Excellence for Blockchain was established by the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest because there is interest in the area of blockchain and distributed technologies, as presented in the IMM Digital Index study, said Adrian Victor Vevera, general director of ICI Bucharest, on Tuesday, at the launch event of the IMM Digital Index study by IMM Romania.

"In the IMM Digital Index it was presented that there is interest in the area of ??blockchain and distributed technologies among SMEs. In 2018, we established, within the Institute, the European Center of Competence and Excellence in Blockchain. We went much further, including in the crypto area, to use blockchain technology for what it can offer, because the crypto area is somewhere at 5% of the potential of blockchain technology. Although we were the first node in Romania of the European blockchain network, after we created, by government decision, the national blockchain network, we launched the idea of using the technology for encryption, cybersecurity, document and file transmission. Last but not least, we have Blockchain technology to create crypto assets from former NFTs, and crypto assets from former cryptocurrencies. So, we try to be as present as possible because the fintech market is very important. Through the crypto area, the assets that "We developed them, we tried to promote Romanian values in a digital space that would address young people," said Vevera.

The IMM Digital Index study shows that technologies such as next-generation intelligent automation and RPA, blockchain and decentralized technologies, and 5G/6G connectivity form a second level of impact.

The European Center of Excellence for Blockchain - ECEB was established at the beginning of 2018, by the Initiative Group formed by the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest, Idea Factory Think Tank, Old Dominion University and EURISC Foundation and was conceived as a promoter of Blockchain technology in Romania.

The Center's objectives are to develop capacities to use Blockchain technology through internships and international training courses, organize events in Romania, promote and support various forms of regulation of Blockchain technology issues by Parliament, Government, responsible authorities and others, promote Blockchain issues and its connection with the protection of critical infrastructures for state institutions and the private sector (such as finance, agriculture, health, etc.), both at national and international levels, and create a common platform for debate between the government and private sectors.

The European Blockchain Center of Excellence serves as a research and development hub on the regulatory framework and adoption of the transformative Blockchain technology, as well as on the development of solutions in the government sector, and is prepared to support medium and long-term national strategies in Romania.

Digitalization in Romania is recognized, appreciated and partially implemented, but is constrained by human capital deficits, fragmented strategies and weak institutional integration, reveals the Romanian Digitalization Index - IMM Digital Index, launched on Tuesday by the employers' organization IMM Romania.

On Tuesday, IMM Romania launched the IMM Digital Index, a first-of-its-kind initiative at a national level dedicated to evaluating the level of digitalization of Romanian microenterprises.
