Automobiles that used to run in Bucharest in the 1950s - 1980s will go on display on Saturday, between 10:00hrs and 16:00hrs, at the Baneasa Airport, as part of the second edition of the "City's Socialist Automobiles" exhibition.

"Automobiles that existed in Bucharest in the 1950s-1980s and their stories come together in an exceptional exhibition that presents the automotive phenomenon in Romania's socialist period. A story about people, cars and their journeys from socialism told in 3 documents: the Privileged, the State, and the Citizens of the Republic," organiser Retromobil Club Romania says in a press statement released on Wednesday.

The exhibition is a unique selection of representative vehicles for 1948-1989 and follows the developments in the automotive phenomenon in the communist era that started with the arrival of Soviet tanks in 1944, as they unfolded chronologically in three distinct periods and with the peculiarities of each: Stalinism (1947 - 1965), De-Stalinization - democratisation of the automobile (1965-1980), Ceausescu's National Communism (1980-1989), told Agerpres.

Among the exhibits on display there will be examples of vehicles for the private use of socialist dignitaries, official cars of President Nicolae Ceauaescu, a Dacia 1300 tuned for racing "as in the old days," the famous Roman RD 111 bus, western models of cars bought by the privileged of the years 1970s from the state shops and those bought by ordinary citizens on the waiting lists in the 1980s, utility vehicles of the communist police, fire brigade, army, and the political police Securitate.

The first edition of the exhibition was organised between September 30 and October 3, 2021, in the parking lot of the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

Founded in 1998 by 21 enthusiasts of historic vehicles and built according to the principles of similar groups in countries with a tradition in the field, Retromobil Club Romania aims to encourage the best preservation of historic vehicles in Romania as well as to cultivate the passion for collecting and restoring them.
