The volume We the People - The Historic Speeches of Donald Trump, with selections, notes and introductory studies by Dan Dungaciu, was launched on Wednesday by Creator Publishing at the "Ion Creanga" event space within the Gaudeamus Book Fair.
"When Donald Trump said in 2016, 'I want to open a relationship with the Russian Federation and speak with China', it was a shock. If you read the 2016 speech, it is exactly what is happening now, albeit in a different setting and atmosphere. It is the trend of history, not an accident of history. So, from that speech to his last address at the United Nations, this book contains almost everything important, especially for the American public, from Donald Trump's speeches. These include his most significant speeches: the inaugural address, the UN speech, speeches reacting to various events, speeches in the Arab world, in Jerusalem, in Poland, including his famous speech there - speeches that clearly outline his theory and vision. Some speeches are highly emotional, in which Donald Trump's love for his country is so evident that even if you are not American, you feel a shiver," Dan Dungaciu, recently elected First Vice-President of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), said at the launch.
In his view, there is no "natural" conversation in Romania about Donald Trump, "a politician who has much to teach us and about whom very little is discussed." "I tried to bring him a bit into the Romanian public's spotlight in this dimension, because we still do not have a natural conversation about Donald Trump. We are still in opposition, still resentful, still in regret, still, in a way, in anger or in a kind of expectation that the harm' caused by Donald Trump's rise will pass. This is a huge mistake. It is the biggest fake news, the greatest media manipulation we see in this space: our inability to view America and the President of the United States honestly and correctly," Dungaciu maintained.
He added that he does not expect this book to radically change Romanian society, but it could create a shift. "Ultimately, the quotes that Donald Trump offers in this volume are also about us, about how the world looks, and if we do not dare to look in the mirror and say, 'we are Romanians, let's start a conversation from this', at least Donald Trump may prompt us to do so. When he speaks to the world, he speaks, as postmodernists would say, 'situated'. He is American, he speaks from America, and nothing else matters to him except America," Dungaciu said.
Attending the launch, Petrisor Peiu, president of the National Leadership Council of AUR, said that "in one way or another, Donald Trump is at the centre of the world today, even if he is on a stage with other leaders who have been in power much longer than him."
"Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and some European leaders have been in power longer than Donald Trump, but they have not succeeded in generating a global movement. (...) Donald Trump somehow changes the course of history starting from 2016," Peiu added.
In his view, Trump's "great art" is that he expressed complex ideas in a simple way, understood by hundreds of millions of people.
"He conveyed big, generous, simple ideas through which he tries to rebuild a Western spirit, based on the notion of reconstructing a different America. Unfortunately, as Professor Dungaciu pointed out, this regained effervescence did not radiate from America to Europe. We have continued to fear these big ideas. We continue to remain in our somewhat small, isolated world. We do not even see what is happening in Turkey. We have not assimilated what is happening in Turkey. We have not assimilated what is happening in the so-called Western Balkans, let alone in China, Korea, or Vietnam - absolutely spectacular developments," Peiu said.
According to AUR President George Simion, Donald Trump has explained that the future of politics will be divided between patriots and globalists.
"We no longer have left and right; many figures in Romanian public life have repositioned along this axis. The publication of this book and future actions serve only to reinforce this idea and this divide, which I, for one, would not want to be so pronounced in Romanian society. I would like us to understand each other much more, to engage in much more dialogue. Unfortunately, (...) it is becoming increasingly difficult to dialogue; discussions about fundamental freedoms and democracy pit people against each other and prevent understanding. I am pleased that, with the addition of Professors Peiu and Dungaciu to this Trumpist party, which has now become Romania's leading party in voter preferences, we are able to give voice to a growing segment of Romanians who are not currently represented politically and give meaning to patriotism in our national-conservative version, that is, to the idea of Romanian identity on both sides of the Prut," Simion said.
According to Creator Publishing, We the People - The Historic Speeches of Donald Trump offers an essential reading for understanding one of the most influential and controversial contemporary political phenomena, gathering defining speeches from the Trump era, rigorously contextualised and analysed for their social, geopolitical and ideological impact, giving readers the opportunity to reflect on the rhetoric of power and the role of political communication in reshaping the international stage.
