Volunteering is a 'school of values' that develops leaders, strengthens communities and shapes responsible citizens, Education Minister Ligia Deca said on Thursday.

Thursday is International Volunteer Day.

"Today we celebrate all those who, through volunteer work, make our communities better places. Volunteering is a 'school of values' that teaches us selflessness, courage and the desire to change the world for the better. I want school to be a place where young people also learn the power of civic engagement," the minister wrote on Facebook.

Deca thanked all the volunteers in Education - teachers, students and parents, who show every day that through solidarity you can contribute to a better world.

"Now, more than ever, is the time to turn civic engagement into action. A simple gesture, but so important for our European future, is to go out and vote. Through solidarity and by electing a leader who will promote European values, we can continue to build a strong, open Romania with a clear voice in Europe," said Ligia Deca.
