Romania ends the cold season with almost one billion cubic meters of gas in storage and from March 12, on certain storages, the injection cycle will restart, the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja announced on Wednesday.
"Romania is ending the cold season with almost one billion cubic meters of gas in storage and, from March 12, as I was informed, the injection cycle will restart on certain storage facilities. So, we are starting to refill them. Moreover, during March, according to information from the National Agency for National Energy and Natural Resources and the forecasts, average temperatures will be above those of previous years", said Burduja.
Asked what Romania's policy is, in the context of a discussion at European level on whether to maintain the storage obligation of 90% of the warehouse capacity, the minister replied: "At European level, we will coordinate with other countries and we will reach the best option, balancing security of supply on the one hand and price on the other, because they are often in contrast".
Starting with 2023, EU member states are obliged to establish a stock of natural gas in storage facilities representing 90% of the capacity of existing storage facilities. Also from 2023, the trajectory for establishing the minimum stock has been established with intermediate objectives for the months of February, May, July and September so that, on November 1, the obligation to establish the minimum stock is fulfilled at 100%, respectively 90% of the capacity of the stockpiles at the national level.
For 2025, the stockpiling trajectory was established in accordance with the provisions of Commission's Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2995 of November 29, 2024 establishing the stockpiling trajectory with intermediate objectives for 2025 for each member state that has underground gas storage facilities on its territory and directly interconnected to its market area, as follows: on February 1 - 41%, on May 1 - 42%, on July 1 - 63%, on September 1 - 84% and on November 1 - 90%.
