The Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile (IICCMER) announces the establishment of a working group to develop the "National Plan for Raising Awareness of the Crimes of Communism in Romania".
"In the current context, in which the phenomenon of disinformation and fake news campaigns undermines historical memory and democratic values, and nostalgia for the communist regime is becoming increasingly prominent in society (as also emerged from the survey commissioned by IICCMER in July 2025), the Romanian Government is taking a decisive step towards consolidating memory, historical and civic education. The working group, organized as a consultative body without legal personality, will include representatives of several public institutions, such as the Prime Minister's Chancellery, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture, the National Institute for Cultural Research and Training, as well as other relevant entities. In addition, experts and representatives of civil society will be invited to ensure a comprehensive and transparent approach," reads a release from IICCMER sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
Secretary of State Dragos Hotea emphasized that "the development of this plan represents the expression of the Romanian Government's firm commitment to promoting memory policies, democratic principles and values, as well as fundamental human rights and freedoms".
"In a period in which nostalgia for the communist period is becoming increasingly visible, this National Plan will represent the central lever of action in the field of education regarding the communist regime in Romania, addressing head-on many of the problems generated by attempts to distort history. I express my conviction that this framework of action, through a sustained and combined effort of all the actors involved, will produce beneficial results for Romanian society", added Hotea, quoted in the press release.
Executive President of IICCMER, Florin - Daniel Sandru, says that "it is fundamental that this initiative becomes a national priority".
"In a context where fake news and all kinds of manipulations distort the public's perception of the communist past, correct awareness of history becomes a civic responsibility. We need to educate young people about the tragic and brutal truth of the communist regime, about the wounds and injustices it caused. Only in this way can we prevent the reappearance of extremist ideologies or nostalgic rhetoric, which threaten our stability and democratic values", emphasized Sandru.
Coordination of activities will be ensured by the Secretary of State within the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and the executive president of IICCMER, and meetings will take place monthly or whenever necessary.
The implementation of this plan at the national level is a priority for IICCMER, being essential for consolidating national memory and ensuring an educated, aware and resilient society, the press release also states.
