Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Thursday that, according to opinion polls, the National Liberal Party (PNL) is currently at about the same level as the result it achieved in the parliamentary elections, and that the party's objective at this time is not to rise in the polls but to do 'what is necessary for the country,' and mentioned that, when he accepted the position of Prime Minister, he also took on 'the very high risk of ending up looking very bad.'

'Polls are snapshots of the moment. But, frankly, when you have the responsibility of a country, when the situation is difficult, you no longer look at polls. You cannot govern by polls if you also want to implement reforms and correct things that have been poorly designed over time. You cannot do that if you constantly pay attention to opinion polls, and when I accepted this position I took on the very high risk of ending up looking very bad, as I have said before. It is not a problem if you leave a public office with a bad image; what matters is not to leave for nothing, to prove that, during the time you held that position - a day, a month, a full term - you did what was right for your community, in this case for your country. From my point of view, that is the most important thing at this moment,' said Ilie Bolojan on Digi 24 private television broadcaster, when asked about opinion polls showing that recently the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) has declined, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has grown, and the National Liberal Party (PNL) remains low in the electorate's preferences.

He added that this does not mean that, at some point, one cannot take into account 'certain political dynamics,' but pointed out that the parliamentary elections are 'some time away,' 'when each party will be judged by what it has done,' whereas now 'the country comes first.'

Asked about PNL's performance in the polls, Bolojan replied, 'Inevitably, when you have, let's say, a good candidate, during a campaign it might act as a pull factor for the party, but if there are situations that do not work in your favour, it might cost you.'

'The National Liberal Party is at about the same level as the result it achieved in the parliamentary elections, and our objective at this moment is not to increase in the polls but to do what is necessary for the country. In the case of Bucharest, our political goal was to propose the best candidate our party can put forward, in the person of my colleague Ciprian Ciucu, so that the people of Bucharest have a real choice, given the experience he has demonstrated and gained over these years at the City Hall of Sector 6,' Ilie Bolojan also said.
