30 cases of West Nile virus infection since June

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced that, between 2 June and 18 September, 30 cases of West Nile virus infection were recorded in Romania, of which 29 had been confirmed, while one is considered a probable case.

The cases were recorded in the municipality of Bucharest (10) and in the counties of Alba (1), Braila (3), Dolj (1), Galati (5), Ilfov (1), Iasi (1), Prahova (1), Salaj (1), Timis (2), Teleorman (1), Tulcea (1), Valcea (1), Vrancea (1).

The cases involve 15 people aged 70-79, four in the 60-69 age group, six aged 50-59, two over 80 years old, and one each in the 10-19, 40-49, and 30-39 age groups.

In this context, INSP specialists make the following recommendations for the public:

* avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers;

* use chemical mosquito repellents;

* prevent mosquitoes from entering the home (by installing window screens);

* ensure the drainage of standing water around the household;

* remove containers with stagnant water and household waste from the yard.
