34,255 new cases of COVID-19 infection in past 24 hrs, death toll hits 59,726

As many as 34,255 new cases of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 were recorded in the last 24 hours, 14,570 more than the previous day, with more than 108,000 tests being carried out, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reports on Wednesday.

It is an absolute record of the number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Romania.

The previous record was 19,685 cases, recorded Tuesday, January 25.

Of the new cases, 4,375 are in reinfected patients, tested positive for a period longer than 180 days after the first infection.

In the last 24 hours, 35,207 RT-PCR tests were performed (19,635 based on case definition and medical protocol and 15,572 on request) and 73,730 rapid antigen tests.

As of Wednesday, 2,083,151 cases of infection with the novel coronavirus have been registered in Romania, of which 38,012 are in reinfected patients, tested positive for a period longer than 180 days after the first passage through the disease.

According to GCS, 1,851,867 patients have been declared cured. To date, 11,650,852 RT-PCR tests and 7,048,030 rapid antigen tests have been processed at national level. Apart from the newly confirmed cases, following the retesting of patients who were already positive, 1,361 people were reconfirmed positive with SARS-CoV-2.

As many as 94 casualties in patients infected with the novel coronavirus, 52 men and 42 women, have been reported in the last 24 hours, the GCS informs. Of the 94 deaths, one was recorded in the age category 0-9 years (a 3-month old baby girl with comorbidities), two in the age category 40-49 years, five in the age category 50-59 years, 24 in the age category 60-69 years, 28 in the age category 70-79 years and 34 in the age category over 80 years.

According to GCS, 88 of the recorded deaths are of patients who have had comorbidities, and for six deceased patients, no comorbidities have been reported so far. Of the total 94 deceased patients, 77 were unvaccinated and 17 vaccinated. The vaccinated patients were aged between 50-59 years and the group over 80 years. All the vaccinated patients who died had comorbidities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 59,726 people diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection have died in Romania.

As many as 7,348 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 are hospitalized in the country's health facilities, 254 more than the previous day, of which 667 are children, the GCS informs.

According to GCS, 692 patients are hospitalized in the ICU wards, 42 more than on the previous day, and 12 are children. Of the 692 patients admitted to the ICU, 585 are unvaccinated.

According to the data available in the alerte.ms application, at national level there are 1,579 ICU beds for COVID-19 patients, of which 391 in Bucharest.

Throughout Romania, 131,301 people confirmed with infection with the novel coronavirus are in isolation at home, and 7,369 in institutional isolation. Also, 87,838 people are in home quarantine, and 55 in institutional quarantine.

Law enforcement have applied, in the last 24 hours, 1,092 contravention sanctions, totaling 225,861 RON, as a result of violating the provisions of Law 55/2020 on some measures to prevent and combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, GCS says.
