The snow layer in the locality of Firiza reached 75 centimetres and traffic on all national, county and local roads is proceeding in winter conditions, with snow-clearing equipment required on some road sections, spokesperson of Maramures Prefecture Dan Buca informed on Tuesday.
'The snow layer measured up to 75 centimetres in Firiza, a locality neighbouring the municipality of Baia Mare, 65 centimetres in the mountain town of Cavnic, 58 centimetres in Gutai Pass on DN 18 [national road] at over 900 metres altitude, 48 centimetres in Baiut, 45 centimetres in Sighetu Marmatiei, 42 centimetres in Grosii Tiblesului and Ruscova, 39 centimetres in Coroieni, 35 centimetres at the Iezer weather station in the Rodna Mountains, Baia Borsa, Valea Vaserului and Viseu de Sus, 33 centimetres in Sieu and Sacel, 31 centimetres in Targu Lapus, 28 centimetres in Ocna Sugatag and 23 centimetres in the municipality of Baia Mare. Roads leading to these localities have been cleared of snow and traffic is possible in optimal conditions,' Dan Buca said.
According to him, the lowest temperature in the county, minus 18 degrees Celsius, was recorded at the Iezer weather station in the Rodna Mountains and in the town of Targu Lapus.
'The coldest conditions were last night and this morning in Targu Lapus and at the Iezer weather station, with minus 18 degrees Celsius. In Prislop Pass and Baia Mare it was minus 17 degrees Celsius, in Seini, Ocna Sugatag, Cavnic and Gutai Pass minus 14 degrees Celsius, and in Sighetu Marmatiei, Baia Sprie, Moisei, Baiut, Viseu de Sus and Borsa minus 12 degrees Celsius,' Dan Buca pointed out.
The low temperatures led to the formation of ice bridges, ice and bottom ice on the watercourses of the Tisa, Viseu, Cisla, Vaser, Ruscova, Iza, Mara, Botiza, Barsau, Lapus, Cavnic, Nistru, Salaj and Cosau rivers.
Dan Buca added that on Tuesday morning road administration workers intervened with 24 vehicles and spread 47 tonnes of anti-skid material. On county road sections, 37 vehicles were used and 600 tonnes of anti-skid material were spread. There are national road sections where the carriageway is clear and dry, while in mountain areas there are sections with compacted snow on the roadway.
Maramures International Airport is open to domestic and international flights and all railway connections with Maramures County are operational.
