8,102 children whose both parents work abroad at March end

The total number of children in Romania whose both parents were working abroad stood at 8,102 at the end of March 2025, 28 more than at the end of the previous year, according to data centralised by the National Authority for the Protection of the Child Rights and Adoption (ANPDCA).

However, the total number of children with at least one parent working abroad dropped to 53,214 at the end of March 2025, down from 54,798 on 31 December 2024, agerpres reports.

Of the 8,102 children with both parents working abroad, 7,422 were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree, without any protection measures in place, while the remainder were placed with a foster carer, in residential care services, or with other families or individuals.

According to the source, 38,949 children had one parent working abroad (compared to 40,357 on 31 December 2024), and of these, 37,268 were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree, without any protection measures. At the same time, 910 children were in the special protection system, such as in the care of a foster carer, in residential services, or with other families or individuals.

In addition, 6,163 children came from families where the sole supporting parent was working abroad (compared to 6,367 at the end of the previous year). Of these, 5,402 children remained at home in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree, without any protection measures.

The total number of children left at home and placed in the special protection system stood at 2,086 on 31 March 2025, an increase of 26 children compared to the end of December 2024. Of these, 375 were in the care of a foster carer, 375 in residential services, 1,238 with relatives up to the fourth degree, and 98 in the care of other families or individuals.
