Academician Ioanel Sinescu granted Doctor Honoris Causa title by Politehnica University of Bucharest

The Senate of the Politehnica University of Bucharest will confer, on Thursday, the academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa to physician and academician Ioanel Sinescu, PhD, a leading figure in contemporary Romanian medicine, in the field of urology, uronephrology and renal transplantation.

According to the higher education institution, with a career spanning more than 46 years, the academician has established himself as a promoter of medical innovation, a school trainer and a model of academic rigor, dedicating his entire activity to clinical excellence, scientific research and the training of generations of physicians who continue his vision and values.

"As a token of gratitude for his entire scientific, didactic and professional activity, as well as for the excellence and innovation through which he consolidated the medical field, especially urology and transplantation in Romania, the Senate of the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest confers to the academician and PhD emeritus Ioanel Sinescu the title of Doctor Honoris Causa," the Laudatio reads.

His medical career is closely linked to the development of one of the most important medical centres in Romania - the Fundeni Clinical Institute - the place where he went through all the professional steps, becoming a central figure in Romanian urology.

During 1980-1990 he attended training courses in world-renowned centres in the USA, France, Germany, China, Israel and South Africa. These skills help him build of one of the most performing kidney transplant centres in Europe: the "Fundeni" Urological Surgery and Kidney Transplant Centre.

In 1988, he obtained a PhD Medicine with a thesis dedicated to urinary tract angiography, a field in which he opened innovative study directions.

A field of strategic importance in the academician's activity is the development of renal replacement therapy in the treatment of advanced chronic renal failure, a field that remains a major priority of the "Fundeni" Urological Surgery Clinic today.

His scientific research activity includes 30 clinical trials and 11 research projects, financed through national and international contracts, through which he significantly contributed to the development of innovative therapeutic protocols, modern surgical techniques and advanced approaches in transplantation and urology.

Ioanel Sinescu's career is impressive: 2,404 kidney transplants, over 400 neobladders, over 400 conservative surgical interventions for kidney tumors and over 100 cases of kidney cancer with cavo-cardiac extension treated through interventions of unprecedented complexity in Romania.

He has been honoured with numerous awards and distinctions, both nationally and internationally. Among the most important are: the National Order "Star of Romania", in the ranks of Commander (2000), Grand Officer (2009) and Grand Cross (2013), the highest distinction of the Romanian state; the "Daniel Danielopolu" Prize of the Romanian Academy (2009) and the "Eugen Proca" Prize of the Romanian Academy of Sciences (2019); the Gold Medal for the invention of the total elbow prosthesis made of shape memory alloys, awarded at the International Inventions Salon in Geneva (2019).

He also received international distinctions granted by scientific societies from Austria, Germany, USA, France, Slovakia and Taiwan.

The "Iuliu Hatieganu" medical universities in Cluj-Napoca (2014) and the "Nicolae Testemitanu" University in Chisinau (2015) also conferred Ioanel Sinescu the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.
