Joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is Romania's most important objective in the upcoming period, given that 70% of the global trade and 90% of the foreign direct investment in Romania is provided by the 38 member countries of the organisation, said Florin Jianu, honorary chairman of SME Romania, at the 32nd edition of the Entrepreneurs' Day, hosted by the city of Braila.
"Joining OECD is Romania's most important objective in the upcoming period. Belonging to this organisation will place Romania in a highly select family: 70% of the global trade and 90% of the foreign direct investment in Romania is provided by the 38 member countries of the organisation. Beyond all the technical aspects and the improvement of some indicators, such as the country rating, the major benefit of joining the OECD is the adoption of very strict rules for the economic environment in Romania. Accession is a difficult process, and Romania is working to comply with all the required regulations, step by step," Jianu is quoted as saying in a press statement on Friday, according to Agerpres.
In his opinion, the OECD motto - "better policies for better lives" - is a concrete and clear idea expressing what Romanian entrepreneurs also want. "The role of business organisations, such as we are, is very important in the OECD infrastructure, thanks to the public policies that we bring for the decisions or regulations to which we also contribute. Through the actions it carries out, SME Romania achieves a convergence with OECD policies: from the "White Paper on SMEs" to the "Romanian Entrepreneurship Index", all our analyses mirror the OECD rules."
In his turn, Marius Ivanciu, chairman of PIMM Braila, said that the organisation aims to support the interests of entrepreneurs in Braila County in relation to local administrations. "I want to emphasise the importance of belonging to an organisation that represents the interests of business. SME Romania is a body that represents local SMEs including at European level, not only in Romania. As a local organisation, PIMM Braila aims to support the interests of entrepreneurs in Braila County. The more we are, the more aware we are of the problems of SMEs, so that we can calibrate our actions to support the business community. At the local level, PIMM Braila has managed to sign two partnerships - one with the Faculty of Engineers and Agronomy in Braila and another with the Braila County Council, for the development of countryside tourism," said Ivanciu.
SME Romania organised on Friday, May 30, the32nd edition of the Entrepreneurs' Day event, a reference event for local entrepreneurship, which the organisation marks annually with a conference of interest for the Romanian business community.
This year, the event was organised in partnership with the SME Braila Employers' Association with the theme "Romania's accession to the OECD," During the event, the major issues related to Romania's accession to the OECD, one of Romania's most important external objectives, expected to happen in 2026, were discussed. The discussions aimed to highlight the necessary steps that Romania must take in order to meet OECD standards in the social field, as well as the essential role of companies in promoting social responsibility, respect for fundamental human rights and responsible business conduct.
