Acting President Ilie Bolojan said on Friday that together with presidential advisor Cristian Diaconescu he sent a request to all competent institutions to provide whatever additional information they have on the annulment of the presidential election in December 2024.
"Foreign policy aspects made up almost our entire agenda, but I read through the minutes of the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) meeting in order to exactly understand the state of affairs and together with Mr. Diaconescu I signed a request to all institutions asking them to brief us on any additional data they have, if such input has arrived in the meantime. I understand that at least so far there is just a short notification from the Public Prosecution Office that certain cases are in the works, but without going deeper into this case. We are waiting for the other information. If there are elements that can be made public, I don't see why we wouldn't do so," Bolojan told a press conference at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
He specified that the Constitutional Court's annulling last year's presidential election was done within a constitutional framework that "complies with constitutional law and based on data provided by the Supreme Council for National Defence. Coming upon issues related to national security, the CSAT informed the Constitutional Court which in its turn, following through its task to oversee the smooth unfolding of presidential elections, made this decision," explained Bolojan.
He specified that the annulment of the vote was an exceptional situation and that he does not believe that Romania will end up in such a situation again.
"The CSAT has certain specific powers and whenever there is a need to examine certain aspects, to make decisions that have to do with defense or national security, I will call the CSAT, not necessarily in ordinary meetings, but whenever necessary. But for this particular matter I hope no other CSAT meeting is needed," Ilie Bolojan argued.
