The number of passengers using Sibiu International Airport (AIS) reached almost 700,000 in 2025, representing a 21% increase compared with 2024, airport representatives announced on Monday in a press release.

"2025 confirmed a clear upward trend for Sibiu International Airport, both in terms of traffic volumes and its regional relevance. Total passenger traffic reached 694,805 passengers by the end of 2025, compared to 573,918 passengers recorded in 2024, an increase of around 21%, indicating sustained interest in flights operated from Sibiu. During 2025, the destination network available from Sibiu was expanded through the introduction of seven new routes: Basel, Frankfurt Hahn, Hamburg, Madrid, Rome Fiumicino, Vienna* (*flights operated until the end of October 2025) and Birmingham, in response to identified market demand and as part of a gradual development process. In the summer season of 2025, charter flights were operated to two new holiday destinations available from Sibiu: Larnaca (Cyprus) and Palma de Mallorca (Spain), thus diversifying leisure travel options for passengers in the region," the AIS press release informs.

The expansion of the direct flight offering from Sibiu International Airport in 2025 helped improve regional connectivity without affecting the stability of existing routes, which continued to record steady demand and interest from passengers, the press release added.

August 2025 marked a milestone and a historic record for Sibiu International Airport, "becoming the first airport in Romania with annual traffic below one million passengers to exceed the threshold of 100,000 passengers handled in a single calendar month," the release highlights.

Also in 2025, restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage were lifted at Sibiu International Airport starting 5 September, and on 12 October 2025 the airport became the first in Romania where the Entry/Exit System (EES) became operational at border control.

AIS management has set the goal of reaching one million passengers flying to and from Sibiu.

"Looking ahead, the threshold of 1,000,000 passengers is an ambitious but achievable target, as long as flights from Sibiu continue to be a primary option for travellers, meeting the real mobility needs of the regional community served," says the press release.

AIS General Manager Marius Ioan Girdea noted that "starting 2026 with the launch of a new route to Milan Bergamo is a sign that there is interest and potential, but the long-term success of each route depends on its consistent use." From 6 January 2026, direct flights on the Sibiu-Milan Bergamo route have been operating from AIS, operated by Wizz Air.
