Romanian tennis player Anca Todoni qualified on Thursday for the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 tournament in Montreux (Switzerland), which offers total prize money of USD 115,000, after defeating Russian Daria Astakhova 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Todoni (aged 20, ranked 112nd in the WTA), the fourth seed, secured victory after two hours and 14 minutes of play.
Astakhova (aged 23, ranked 657th in the WTA) had won their only previous encounter, in the first round at Heraklion in 2020, with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Todoni has earned a cheque for USD 3,450 and 27 WTA points.
In the quarter-finals, Todoni will face Latvian Darja Semenistaja (aged 22, ranked 115th in the WTA), the fifth seed.
The Latvian leads 2-1 in head-to-head matches, having won in 2023 in Bucharest (WTA 125) with 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in the quarter-finals, and again in Montreux last year, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, also in the quarter-finals. Todoni won their most recent encounter, in the semi-finals in Santa Cruz (Bolivia) last year, 6-0, 6-1.
