Consumer protection commissioners have imposed fines of over 7.45 million RON following controls carried out last week on more than 2,000 economic operators across the country.

"The control actions covered a wide spectrum of economic activities, from rural operators to logistics and commercial complexes, including areas with a high degree of specialization, such as precious metals and public catering, reaffirming the multifaceted and omnipresent nature of consumer protection in all economic activities," a statement from the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) was released to AGERPRES on Saturday.

Following the checks carried out, ANPC commissioners found multiple non-conformities, for which 1,468 contravention fines were applied, amounting to over 7.45 million lei, and 962 warnings.

Also, a permanent halt to the marketing of non-compliant products, worth over 210,000 RON, was ordered, as well as a temporary halt to the marketing of products worth over 2.82 million RON.

In addition, ANPC commissioners stopped the provision of services, until the deficiencies are remedied, for 24 economic operators, Agerpres informs.

The main non-conformities found were: products of plant origin with poor quality, with mold deposits and advanced dehydration; seafood with altered thermal state, with excessive ice deposits, indicating interruption of the cold chain; flooring in an advanced state of degradation, with missing elements, cracks and consistent accumulations of dirt, favoring product contamination; failure to comply with the storage conditions and temperatures provided by the manufacturer, with products being stored directly on the unit's flooring; marketing of dangerous toys or without mandatory safety information; deficiencies in informing consumers about textile and footwear products, including the lack of fibrous composition; placing toys on the market without identifying the person responsible; marketing of electrical equipment without documentation of compliance with EU standards.

Other problems identified by ANPC concerned: unjustified restriction of consumers' right of return; use of expired substances in the testing process of precious metals at pawnshops; lack of appropriate weighing equipment and metrological checks; display of expired promotions, misleading consumers; use of non-compliant reagents in testing precious metals; failure to display prices of products and jewelry, lack of warranty certificate and information on the method of sale (per piece or per gram).

"The law is not optional and is not negotiable. ANPC has the obligation to ensure that consumer rights are respected and that the law is applied correctly, uniformly and without exceptions," ANPC President Ionel-Cristinel Obretin said, quoted in the press release.

The ANPC inspections took place between January 26 and 30, 2026
