The ruling coalition's joint presidential candidate Crin Antonescu declared on Monday that Ilie Bolojan's taking over as acting president of Romania does not affect in any way the National Liberal Party's decision to support his presidential bid.
"Ever since the discussion about my possible candidacy began, you have passionately and zealously examined the hypothesis that I will not get the necessary political support. I will have it. We had a meeting here today. Ms. Mayor, Mr. Mayor told you what was discussed. I, for my part, gave you a firm answer: Mr. Ilie Bolojan's presence as acting president at Cotroceni - which in our opinion is anyway auspicious - has no influence whatsoever, it doesn't affect in any way the decision of the National Liberal Party to support a candidate, which has already been taken by the party. I have nothing more to say," Antonescu stated at the Palace of Parliament when asked if there was a possibility that he would no longer be backed in his race for president after Ilie Bolojan takes over the country's helm as acting head of state.
Antonescu added that he does not know if Klaus Iohannis's resignation benefits his candidacy.
"I don't know. It's clear that those who pitched around the impeachment idea had only electoral reasons in mind, and I am sorry that others joined them. I do not know if this will be an advantage or not, we'll see. AUR can say anything they please, in the end we will go before the citizens and I don't think that this calculation should hold us back for very long. If it will bring us points, we'll see. In the end, I believe that the intentions, plans, proposals for Romania's future must be based on very serious elements, not on the effect of the resignation of a lame-duck president," Antonescu said.
Asked about Klaus Iohannis's gesture, Antonescu said that he never claimed that he would be a burden. "From my point of view, I hope this will ease off some of the pressure in society and will get a false theme out of the limelight. I repeat, we are not discussing in this electoral campaign whether what Mr. Iohannis did was good or not," Antonescu concluded.
