Bucharest's newest art-house cinema, Apollo111 Cinema, opens to the public on Thursday.
The programme for the first weeks will include fiction and documentary films premiering locally, with an important track record of awards at specialist festivals, as well as an evening dedicated to the films of the late director Cristian Nemescu and a retrospective of the first films directed by Corneliu Porumboiu.
"The first weeks of screenings at Apollo111 set the direction of our cinema - we have a mix of recent films from the catalogues of local distributors, retrospectives of Romanian authors, documentaries and films for the whole family. This is just the beginning. We are already thinking further ahead about a programme that we hope will keep audiences enthusiastic throughout the year. It is our small contribution to preserving this irreplaceable habit - going to the cinema - which can remain an anchor, especially in complicated times," manager of Apollo111 Cinema Ioan Maxim said according to a press release.
Among the first titles in the programme are the premieres of two Romanian films, namely the documentary "Still Nia" directed by Paula Onet, a poetic and experimental portrait of an artist of Romanian origin based in France, awarded the trophy for best documentary at the Astra Film Festival and winner of the audience award at Les Films de Cannes a Bucarest and "Catane," the feature debut of director Ioana Mischie, a comedy inspired by real events, about resilience, ingenuity and the mysteries of a mountain village.
International premieres include "Pillion" directed by Harry Lighton, the UK, 2025, starring Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling, the neo-noir "The Island," directed by Jan Ole Gerster, Germany, 2025, the Japanese production "Exit 8," directed by Genki Kawamura, Japan, 2025, and "The Voice of Hind Rajab," directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, Tunisia, 2025, the impressive story of a little girl from Gaza and those trying to save her, winner of the Silver Lion at Venice. The punk documentary "Fiume o Morte!" directed by Igor Bezinovic, Croatia, 2025, nominated for the European Film Awards, will also be screened.
Special programmes include screenings of two films directed by Cristian Nemescu: the short film "Poveste la scara C" and the medium-length film "Marilena de la P7." Cristian Nemescu (1979-2006) remains one of the most promising and, at the same time, tragic figures of contemporary Romanian cinema, a director whose brief body of work managed to capture the energy, tension and contradictions of post-communist Romania with rare authenticity.
Audiences are also invited to the Corneliu Porumboiu Retrospective, which will include two short films - "Gone with the wine" and "A trip to the city" - and the medium-length film "Liviu's Dream".
Apollo111 Cinema will run a weekly programme from Thursday to Sunday, the cinema hall has 128 seats and tickets can be purchased online at apollo111.ro.
Apollo111 is located near the Cismigiu Park, in Universul Palace (Ion Brezoianu 23-25, building B, basement).
