Senate President Mircea Abrudean said on Monday that the governing coalition remains "complicated' and "tense" but has proven stable in parliamentary votes, and the National Liberal Party (PNL) wants to continue in the current formula.
He also argued that social measures cannot be supported without available budget funds.
"We are the party that has always generated stability. We want things to move forward in this complicated, tense coalition, which has nevertheless shown stability at the vote," Abrudean said at the Senate.
Asked about the social measures pushed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), he replied: "There is always a need for social measures, and the PNL will support them if there is money."
He added that without a balanced budget, spending cuts are required, which depend on an administration reform that remains blocked. "PNL is pushing for this reform because it brings savings and allows support for vulnerable groups and environmental measures," he said.
Regarding PSD's demand to pair economic relaxation with a solidarity package, Abrudean warned against "entering an electoral logic" prematurely. "Everyone wants to do more for their electorate, but we must see what is actually possible," he added.
He stressed that PNL has a clear mandate to support the administration reform, calling it "a red line" and part of the coalition's agreed government program.
Asked whether the PSD is acting like an opposition party within the coalition, Abrudean said the situation is "complicated" and visible "to the naked eye", adding that it affects governance.
He expressed hope that tensions can be overcome so the coalition can pass the administration reform and approve the state budget, which he said is essential for Romania's sovereign rating, investment plans and overall financial stability.
On Sunday, PSD's National Political Council decided to back the fast-track adoption of the economic relaunch package, along with a solidarity package aimed at protecting pensioners and other vulnerable groups from the sharp rise in living costs.
