Assets of private pension schemes at RON 156.44 bln as of end-December 2024

Total assets held by Romania's private pension schemes amounted to RON 156.44 billion as of end-December 2024, up 19% year-over-year, and 5.3% up from mid-2024, the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) reports. Expressed as a GDP share, the system's total assets accounted for 9.06% as of end-December 2024.

As of end-2024, privately managed pension schemes (Pillar II) had assets worth RON 150.88 billion, up 19% year-over-year.

Assets managed by voluntary pension schemes (Pillar III) stood at RON 5.55 billion, by 17% more than in the same period of the previous year.

As of December 31, 2024, there were 9.12 million contributors registered with Romania's 17 private pension funds, compared to 8.86 million at the end of the previous year. The number of contributors with the privately managed pension schemes was 8.29 million, compared to 8.15 million in December 2023, and the number of contributors with the voluntary pension system was 833,000 compared to 710,800 as of December 31, 2023.

The investment policy within the asset portfolios of private pension schemes continues to be focusing on the local financial market, with the share of investments in fixed income instruments representing 72% of the total investment portfolio of private pension schemes. As of end-December 2024, 23% was invested in shares.
